PORTUGAL: Lisbon to have new international airport

LISBON: The Portuguese Government has finally announced the location of the new Lisbon International airport. The airport will be built on the south bank of the river Tagus, and entails the building of a new bridge and adaptation of the projected TGV network to the location of the airport.

After many studies and different opinions in several forums of discussion, both on a civilian and on a technical level, the Prime Minister announced that the airport will be built in Alcochete. This area is located southeast of Lisbon, on the south bank of the river Tagus, 48km from the city centre.

Initial studies pointed to another location, in Ota, northwest of Lisbon, 45km from the city centre. However, due to heavy criticism from opposition political parties and some private sectors, further studies were ordered to the National Engineering Laboratory. Now, the conclusions were clear, pointing towards Alcochete.

Opening in 2014
The main reason for this was a large reduction on the total cost of the project. Ota would be a more expensive solution. Furthermore, it is expected that the works may be concluded in 2014, three years before the planned conclusion in Ota. Alcochete has also the potential and possibility to be expanded in the future, while that would not be possible in Ota.

Further environmental assessments to be made
The environmental impact is still not fully assessed and further studies will be taken, according to the demanding EU rules applicable to these issues. The total cost of the new airport, including the access to it, will be around 6,2 billion euros.

New rail and road bridge
The decision of building the airport on the south bank of the river also implies that a new bridge will be built. It will be the third one over the Tagus and the second one to have a railroad as well. The expected traffic on the new bridge is around 66 thousand vehicles per day.

Also the projected TGV network will be adapted to the new location of the airport. This network is vital to Portugal, linking the country to the high-speed European train network. Lisbon will be linked to Galicia, in the north via Porto, and to Madrid.
